About Me

Wayfinding Mortality

Kate Baxter

A descendant of Scottish Mormon pioneers and other global explorers, Kate Baxter writes and thinks about what it means to be a modern LDS woman of faith, hopes, and doubts. While generally rooted in real life, her Mormon-adjacent writings range from personal essay and creative nonfiction to speculative fiction.

Wayfinding Mortality is a collection of snapshots of her life’s journey. The idea of navigating by faith toward celestial waypoints reflects her experiences more closely than a covenant path.

She’s kinda cranky that way.

Living in the intermountain west, you can find her on the back row of Relief Society, struggling to stay off her phone and Candy Crush. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram at Kate Baxter, Author or email her at “her firstname”@KateBaxterAuthor.com.

Multidimensional Progression

In the shower this morning, where I get my best thoughts, I was thinking about a friend who was distraught that her trans son was "no longer progressing." “Tell me more,” I said. “Well, she…he…can’t go to the temple.” Real anguish and tears. “But there is so much more...

Sitting in Relief Society, the talk turns to Luke 24:13-35 and the two disciples who walked with Jesus after his resurrection and knew him not. “This doesn’t make sense,” says Sister Brown. “They really couldn’t be disciples if they didn’t recognize him!” “Yeah,” says...
